What is Nature-Based Yoga & Meditation?

Nature-based yoga and meditation are simply practices that connect someone with the natural world. Often, the practitioner combines traditional yoga poses and practices with an emphasis on finding presence in their natural environment. Typically these practices involve an outdoor setting, environmental awareness, and sustainability principles. In this article, we will explore what nature-based yoga and meditation are, their benefits, and how to practice them.

Nature-Based Yoga & Meditation Explained

Nature-based yoga and meditation combine physical postures (asana), breathwork (pranayama), and meditation with an appreciation for the natural world we live in. The practice of nature-based yoga and meditation can take place in a variety of outdoor settings, including the woods, beaches, parks, mountains, and even a patch of lawn. Practitioners often focus on the natural elements around them to enhance their mindfulness practice and deepen their connection to nature through experience.

Benefits of Nature-Based Yoga & Meditation

Yoga is a centuries-old practice that can be done nearly anywhere, but practicing yoga in nature can be especially beneficial for the body and mind. Nature provides a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere that encourages mindfulness. Here are some of the benefits of practicing yoga in nature:

  1. Physical health: Like traditional yoga, nature-based yoga can improve flexibility, strength, balance, and overall physical health.

  2. Mental health: Spending time in nature has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety, and even depression. Combining a yoga practice with nature can boost the mental health benefits of both activities.

  3. Connection with nature: Practicing yoga outdoors can deepen our appreciation and connection with the natural world through simple observations. This can lead to greater compassion for our environment and a desire to protect the planet.

  4. Mindfulness: Nature-based yoga encourages us to be present and allows for the opportunity to further understand the interconnectedness of all living things. This can help us cultivate a greater sense of mindfulness and awareness in our daily lives.

How to Practice Nature-Based Yoga & Meditation

If you are interested in practicing nature-based yoga and meditation, here are some tips to get started:

  1. Find a natural setting: Look for an outdoor location that inspires you such as a forest, beach, park, patch of grass, etc.

  2. Choose a time: Plan your practice for a time when you can fully immerse yourself in the natural setting, where you’re not constrained to meet any obligations afterward.

  3. Dress appropriately: Wear comfortable, breathable clothing that allows you to move freely and protects you from the elements. Layers!

  4. Bring a mat: A yoga mat can serve as a stable surface for your practice, especially if the ground is uneven or rocky.

  5. Focus on the elements: Incorporate your surroundings into your practice. For example, you might focus on the sound of the birds or the feel of the wind on your skin.

  6. Be mindful: As you practice, be as fully present in the moment as you can and welcome a sense of gratitude for the natural world around you.
